This article is the first part of a 5 part series talking about the nature and affects of AI to our future by Inka Vuorinen of Momentum Design.
Previous parts of this blog series talked about AI being everywhere, affecting everything, and how it can be poisoned and used against us. Now I want to talk about human connection and how AI has affected it.
We were promised connection.
Do you still remember when all the famous social media platforms were launched with promises to shrink distances, foster empathy, and bring people closer? Yet, for many of us, the opposite seems to be true.
Doom scrolling became a thing, notifications ping without a pause and even though you get FOMO every weekend, you have increasing social-anxiety. Increasing number of people are either addicted to social media, or so full of it, they don’t want anything to do with it.
Somewhere between algorithms and engagement metrics, our personal ranking between intimacy and real-life connection have been flipped with visibility and being known.
What has accelerated this change in priorities has been AI. Recommendation engines, content-ranking algorithms, and attention-optimizing systems don’t just serve us information. They shape what we see, how we feel, and what we value. They nudge us toward the content most likely to keep our eyes on screens, clicks on buttons, and thumbs scrolling.
AI doesn’t intend to isolate or manipulate. It simply calculates patterns and predicts behavior, and then does what it’s told to do.
It can steer human attention in ways that have profound social consequences. What seems organic, viral, or popular is often carefully curated by invisible algorithms or manipulated by phone farms. Thousands of “likes,” shares, and interactions may be amplified artificially, leaving us unsure what is genuine, what is important, and what is true.
What happens when you can’t trust ratings or view counts as a metric for good content or an app?
I see the social media at the moment as a kind of mirage. Connections appear numerous and active, yet many are shallow. Engagement replaces intimacy, virality replaces depth. Online communities may feel vibrant, yet they can be fragile reflections of real human interaction.
A single coordinated campaign or automated bot network can amplify certain narratives, subtly reshaping perception and discourse. Trust — once the foundation of community — becomes a scarce resource.
I must mention, that authenticity has risen to be a very valued metric in all social settings, including social media. Katja Presnal also speaks about this in her recent blog post Meta’s Andromeda Update. But it does make me wonder, as AI tools become better and better, and it is harder to spot AI generated videos, text and pictures; Will authenticity become a mirage as well? How will anyone know what it means?
It’s easy to forget that every “like,” comment, or share feeds the algorithms. Each small action contributes to an invisible ecosystem, reinforcing certain patterns and suppressing others.
We are participants in this digital choreography, often without realizing how our choices feed the system that, in turn, shapes our behavior.
Understanding how AI shapes attention, engagement, and perception helps us navigate the digital landscape without losing ourselves.
Social media and AI do not create isolation on their own; they reflect our collective patterns back to us, amplified and magnified. Our biases, our tendencies toward sensationalism, our hunger for validation, are all mirrored and intensified. The platforms become echo chambers, and what begins as personal expression can quickly become a curated illusion of consensus.
Practice critical reflection. Question what you see, pause before you share, and seek diverse perspectives as an act of agency in a world increasingly shaped by unseen algorithms.
We can and must reclaim some measure of human control even within these digital ecosystems.
By consciously choosing where to invest attention, which voices to amplify, and how to interact, we shift the system from passive consumption toward active, intentional engagement.
Technology reflects our world, but it also challenges us to engage with it more thoughtfully.
Social media can still be a tool for genuine connection if we understand the various forces shaping our attention and act consciously.
As we explore the landscape shaped by AI, social media, and human behavior, we are reminded that connection is not automatic. It is cultivated, nurtured, and sometimes fought for.
This was the third part of a 5 part series talking about the nature and affects of AI to our future.
In Part 4, we will turn to autonomous AI and the ethical questions it raises: when machines begin to act independently, how do we guide them, and what responsibilities do we carry as their creators and stewards?
Inspired by a recent client company webinar on AI and cybersecurity, which explored the subtle ways AI influences decisions, the risks of data poisoning, and the growing need for critical awareness in digital spaces.
